Bridging the Digital Divide

Ahead of the Manufacturing Digitalisation Summit in June, Kayode Adisa, Site Director at Fine Lady Bakeries sat down with The Manufacturer discusses why the true barrier to digital transformation is rarely the technology itself, but rather the human element.

He identifies three primary psychological hurdles: the fear of losing control, scepticism rooted in past technological failures, and the anxiety that automation will lead to job displacement.

“At the heart of it is a lot of anxiety... to truly manage it, we need to understand that we should be patient with people, listen to their concerns, and let them know that we have taken on board what they have said. ”

Kayode argues that change agents must move beyond technical implementation and focus on building psychological safety. By practicing active listening and maintaining transparency, even regarding difficult topics like workforce restructuring, leaders can align engineering, production and commercial teams.

Ultimately, Kayode emphasises that the goal of integration is to prepare individuals for the roles of tomorrow, ensuring that digital tools empower the workforce rather than alienate it.
